It was this month, 20 years ago when I landed here in Mexico City for the first time. My business partner and I had read a Fortune Magazine article about how Mexico was the next big place.
The peso was about 3.5 to the dollar (soon to drop precipitously to 9:1). Nafta was brand new.
We figured we could take a whack at Comdex in Mexico by peeling off niche events in the networking and database/unix categories.
A few months later, my alcoholic, chain-smoking, 53-year old business partner had a mild heart attack, leaving me to figure things out down here on my own during his 6 month recovery, continuing into the years after.
3.5 exciting years followed. Half time here, half at home.
Today I’m here for my Bloomberg Mexico Summit – theme – Mexico’s Moment. Peso 13:1. Focus reforms that will change things here.
Me older. Maybe wiser.
Always fun to remember the part of me that will always be here.
Hi Mexico. Nice to see you.
