Don’t Get Too Comfortable

Dateline: United Club. Slow night.

9:00 pm: Kids making a ruckus over by the airline club coffee machine. Incessant paging of Ms. Xxxx, a passenger on a United flight to Sydney. Woman peacefully snores away in a chair by the window.

9:30 pm: Another flight announced. A bunch of people gather their things and noisily leave. Peaceful snoring woman continues.

9:30 – 10:30 Various activities. More people leave. Only me and peaceful snorer left In the club. Snoring continues.

10:45: Club employee: “sir we close in 15 minutes. No rush. Just letting you know” (jostles peaceful snoring woman). “Ma’am, just letting you know we close in 15 minutes.”

Groggy, formerly peaceful snoring woman: “Ok. Can you tell me if my flight is on time?”

Club employee: “Are you also heading to Mexico City?”

Increasingly alert woman: “No. Sydney.”

—– long pause —–

Club employee: “Are you Ms. Xxx?”

Stressed out woman: “Yes”

Club employee: “Uh oh. Can you come to the desk with me?”

Me: (slinks out the door before the wide awake woman realizes what has just happened)
