Back to Reality

Post-Burma culture shock. Jetlag edition.

Noises that break the nighttime silence:
— Burma – Fruit bats
— New York – Snow plows

Weather quirks:
— Burma – Cool nights, hot days
— New York – Frigid snowstorm weather for days, to be followed by tepid weather and rain Sunday

Simple living:
— Burma – Fishing, farming, living in villages with little infrastructure
— New York – Sleeping on the street of an efficient, high-tech city

Expensive means:
— Burma – $.50 for a steamed, shucked ear of corn when the person up the street offered it for $.25
— New York – $1.5million for a 900 square foot apartment

Sunrise brings:
— Burma – the end of the work night, fisherman sorting through their catches, enjoying family time before afternoon sleep
— New York – the beginning of the work day, stealing family time and rest

Kindness means:
— Offering a ride on the bumpy road in the back of a cart filled with items to be delivered to the village
— Greeting a stranger on the street

Welcome home. Can’t get enough of either.
