Shades of Care

Man with Giant Magnifying Glass reading the newspaper at McDonald’s – to man staring into space across the table while drinking a cup of coffee (average age of the two maybe 80):

Glass Man: Hurricane Sandy was a year ago. Can you believe that?

Staring Man: Don’t care.

Glass Man: [testily] You don’t care about all the people who died and the destruction?

Staring Man: Yes I do.

Glass Man: [even more testily] A lot of people lost their houses too

Staring Man: I care about that too.

Glass Man: [has now set down the magnifying glass] You said you didn’t care.

Staring Man: I don’t care that it was a year ago.

[both laugh and go back to what they were doing]
