At my Tuesday diner:
Man: Excuse me. Sorry to bother you. Do you know where the Statue of Liberty is from here?
Me: It’s all the way downtown. Keep going until you get to the bottom of Manhattan, you’ll end up in Battery Park. Take the Staten Island Ferry free to get a really good view or take the Ellis Island/Statue boat if you want to pay for the tour.
Man: It’s probably too far to walk, right?
Me: Yes. Where are you in from?
Man: Nebraska. We got in yesterday. Haven’t seen much yet. Let me ask you this, is the Statue near the Today Show?
Me: No. That’s about 3 blocks from here in Rockefeller Center.
Man: Oh. So we can walk to that. Then we’re going to Ground Zero.
Me: That’ll be down closer to where the Statue boat is. I’ll tell you what – hand me that napkin and start listing the things you want to see. And I’ll give you my number – call me if you get lost.
