A LOVE STORY
I never knew you existed in space or time.
Until today.
Your belly pressed against my back as I stood at the counter talking to the attendant.
Turning to see what what crush I had found, I caught a whiff of your breath as you leaned forward to look at the menu. Ever closer, belly squished ever more into me, you swayed as you casually stood.
Waiting.
I found myself pushed too far for comfort into the edge of the order counter.
It reminded me of times gone by, crowded rooms in China, India, Brazil and farther afield.
Yet it was just us two. No other soul standing in line.
Alone together.
I was ordering coffee.
You? No “form line here” could keep us apart.
At first I had no words. Nothing to offer in conversation.
Comfortable silence?
When at last I found the words to say “Sir, is there something I can help you with?”
You responded with some unintelligible grunt, most certainly a language of love.
A moment in time. Two people …
