Gray morning in the city. My Friday diner has only 24 seats. Sleepy, dreary, but comforting. Light jazz quietly playing, pane-windowed wall closed.
Guy next to me chuckles as a 6/7 year old kid gets off the city bus in a full police uniform. Then another kid old school in a sheet with two holes for eyes, but struggles and trips because the sheet is too long.
We laugh together.
The other six customers see what’s going on. When the next city bus stops, everyone is crowded in the seats by the window chatting about the costumes and having a laugh.
Owner brings us cookies.
Oh, Halloween morning in the city with strangers.
Tonight will be a whole different story.
