Happy Patriots Day!
Completely unaware of this holiday unique to Boston, I reported to the office on this day in 1997 right after moving to that fair city. The office was oddly deserted (but I’m not sure it was an official holiday).
Roaming the desolate hallways, wondering what was going on and why no one told me the place would be empty, I ran into the one person on my floor who was hard at work.
“Didn’t anybody tell you it’s Patriot’s Day? And Marathon Day? And Re-enactment Day in Lexington? Go home,” he said gruffly.
Wondering if I was in trouble and why that would be given that my only crime was showing up to the office, I said “I’m new here.”
“I know. You work for Sue. Bill Mahan. Nice to meet you.”
