Hold This for Me, Please?

On the subway.

Guy (over 6 feet tall) is sound asleep, wearing giant headphones, leaning precariously to the left, about a 70 degree angle above the seat. There is an empty seat between him and a woman on his left.

Woman on his left eyes him warily, watching his progress as he slowly drops downward. She looks around the car for sympathy. Sleepy man slumps very close to her arm. With a look of resignation, she gets up carefully and moves.

Train jolts to a stop. Sleepy man brings himself almost upright in response to the sudden motion.

Passenger gets on the train. She is surprised to see two empty seats. Takes the one recently vacated by the woman who moved.

Sleepy man begins his downward journey again as the train starts, his body slumped over the empty seat, elbow touching the seat, top of his head finally reaching the point where it rests against the passenger’s elbow. She looks annoyed, glances around the car for options, carefully gets up and moves, causing Sleepie’s head to gently knock the seat.

Train stops. Jolts. Sleepie is back upright.

Boarding the train, woman takes the seat recently vacated. Man races onto the train, sees an empty seat, directly next to Sleepie, ignoring the straphangers, he takes the seat. Train leaves the station.

Sleepie’s head immediately drops onto the new guy’s shoulder. New guy takes both hands, shoves him upright, then holds him upright with one hand, while picking up his backpack with the other and setting it up next to his shoulder. He releases Sleepie’s head, which immediately drops to the backpack.

Life returns to the silent, morning subway normal.
