Day 8. Trudging down the steps of my temporarily elevator-less building. Turning the corner at the 5th floor landing, had an-all-too-common-lately shock of almost bumping into someone who was entering the stairwell.
Me: Oops! We really have to keep our eyes open these days
Him: Yeah. You’re up early too, huh.
Me: Yep. Luckily this is an occasional early morning, not the norm. You up at this hour every day?
Him: More often than not. I work at the hospital, so it’s not always consistent. What do you do?
Me: (I tell him).
Him: You a lifetime New Yorker?
Me: Feels like it, but no. 10 years here. Lived everywhere else though.
By now without even noticing it, we’ve gotten to the second floor.
Him: Have a good one. Was fun to talk a little. I only see you at the annual (owner’s meeting) or for q quick hello when we pass each other in the lobby.
Me: Likewise. Who says a little stair walking doesn’t have a few benefits.
We go our separate ways.
